My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt.
As each student came into the class, they were given one question each. They were asked to sit at a table with others who had the same question. There are 24 in the group so roughly 3 students per question. After the 5 minutes were up, the speed dating began. Each student had to move around the room and meet with another student but not one who also had the same question as them.
What would be ideal is something that does all of them in one or two hours. It has helped capture those multi-trajectory needs and had another subject teacher coming down to ask about how to do it in their subject as the students declared for its benefits in their following lessons. Each pair is allocated a different sub-heading topic to work on.

The campus interview is an intractable tradition, despite the extensive literature on the inadequacy and even the misleading nature of this ritual. I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside. The best part is that this lesson model is so versatile that you can find a creative way to use it for just about anything! I facilitate this lesson to help my students practice their rhetorical skills during our unit on persuasion.
To do this, I use a variety of topics, ranging from silly to serious, so that the debates spark some friendly controversy. Speed debating is great way to incorporate a lot of practice to familiarize students with the strategies and structure of debate. Just like speed debating, this strategy involves mini discussions over essential questions. This helps students critically think, hear different perspectives, and articulate their ideas in a low-risk setting.
I like to use speed discussion during thematic units, as a way to facilitate synthesis of different texts. This strategy is also a great way to expose students to different ideas and perspectives during the pre-writing phase of the writing process. When I explain speed learning to the students, it is inevitable that one of them will say… is this like the learning version of speed dating, and the answer is, Yes! One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower.
With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students. I communicate a defined outcome as well as a time limit to help focus the discussions.
